James Buchanan Barnes grew up in Brooklyn, New York. A neighborhood bully (constantly shadowed by his toady, Steve Rogers), he enlisted in the army at seventeen, not because he felt especially patriotic, or wanted to be a hero, but because he wanted to shoot people. When the United States was attacked by Japan, Bucky was thrilled: finally, he was going to be getting a taste of the action he'd been wanting for so long. He landed during Operation: Torch in North Africa, and later fought his way up the boot of Italy with the 107th. And then HYDRA caught him. And maybe offered him a deal. And honestly? He kind of liked what they were selling. Really liked it. HYDRA wins the war. The future is a much different place than what we know, and Sergeant James Barnes is right behind the Red Skull every step of the way. Until he's presumed killed in action on a mission in the former United States, anyway. Then, his story kind of does a U-Turn, because the former bully, current HYDRA thug becomes a mercenary for SHIELD, which has been slowly growing within HYDRA to pull the organization down from inside. Is it brainwashing? A change of heart? Who knows. (They call him the Winter Soldier.) |
